Empathy is the ability to feel, understand, and be sensitive to others’ feelings and thoughts. It is often expressed as the ability to, “put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.” This shows that we can understand how a person feels in a given situation. Empathy can be shown to others through being supportive and by expressing caring behaviors.
Sympathy is when someone feels bad, sorrowful, or pity towards someone else’s misfortune, loss, or grievance. It is the emotion we show when someone is in pain or suffering and we can identify it as a common feeling. Often people feel sympathy over a death or loss.
